I’ve written rhymes most of my life. I never planned on producing but at some point I needed beats and didn’t know anyone who made them so I taught myself. I dabbled over time using an ASR10, then Reason 2.5-6, Ableton, and then eventually added an SP404sx to my setup because the effects and live options seemed so perfect for my shows. The other reason I got the 404 was inspiration from Ras G, Dibia$e, SAMIYAM, and Ohbliv. I wanted to challenge myself and knew the limited functionality of a 404 would do just that. It’s taken some trial and error. Sometimes I felt like it wasn’t the right tool for me and I sold it, but then would buy it again and try my hand once more and resample and make beats, only to feel like the 404 was kicking my ass. It wasn’t until Covid hit that I dug in more and released “First Contact v1” using just the 404/resample method. I was excited but knew I needed more practice.
Fast forward to producer Oldboy doing a great explanation of how to use pattern mode and everything fully-clicked. “RALPHIE v1” is my homage to those leaders who inspired me and to growing up in NY as a kid being called Ralphie by my family and friends on the block. Everything here was made on the SP404sx using records as sample sources then created on pattern mode, dumped into Ableton and EQd, then sent to MJC from FBR for mastering.
We present to you a beat tape full of chops, soul, punch, and a large 'nod factor.'
